Itinerary

Day 1 : Welcome to Kanpetlet

Welcome to Myanmar’s stunning town Bagan. Upon arrival to Nyuang U Airport, hop into a 4WD and drive off towards Kanpetlet, a picturesque colonial British hill station located 3,000 feet above sea level.

The 7-hour journey takes you across the mighty Irrawaddy River and into a land barely visited by outsiders as you pass by untouched scenery, and local villages and markets. Stop in the village of Saw and enjoy a picnic lunch as you stretch your legs taking in the gorgeous landscape, arriving in Kanpetlet in the mid-afternoon. Spend the rest of the day free at leisure to walk around the hill station independently.

Day 2 : Meet tattooed Chin women after reaching the remote Chin village of Aye

Start the morning with a 1-hour drive to the base camp sat just below Mount Victoria to prepare for your ascent of this 3,000 metre high mountain. Take in the splendid views of the surrounding Chin Mountains as you weave through forests and rhododendrons, resting at the peak and enjoying a prepared picnic lunch.

After lunch, start the descent to the upper base camp, where pick-up is arranged to bring you to the remote Chin village of Aye, perched on a cliff. Although, the distance is short, the drive can take up to 90-minutes depending on road conditions. Take time to explore the area, interacting with the villagers and learning more about their culture and lifestyle as you get to know your host family over a home-cooked meal in the evening. It is also possible to see some women with face tattoos and to hear their perspective on this old tradition.

A one-hour hike brings you to Kyardo Village, where the villagers are famous for their colourful traditional clothing and spiritual beliefs in animism. Spend time in the village learning about the worship of Nats and how animism plays in their daily lives before departing for the old Chin Village of Lote Pe, located around a 30-minute walk away.

Walk through the dusty village streets and see more elder women with face tattoos before hiking 60-minutes to return to the base camp. Hop into the waiting car and drive 1-hour to Mindat, checking into your hotel and resting for the evening at leisure.

Important notes

About this tour

  • This trip includes long journeys, especially on days 1 and 4. This is the best and only way to access these remote locations, but we promise you that the experiences make it more than worthwhile
  • This trip includes a moderate level of fitness to summit the 3000 m high Mt Victoria on day 2 as well as to access the fabled Chin tribes located in the area on days 2 and 3. Terrain can be uneven, muddy or loose underfoot. Although these adventure activities are possible for most travellers, a good level of fitness and a comfortable pair of shoes will help increase your enjoyment of this experience.
  • Generally speaking, Myanmar is a hot and humid country, although it can be much cooler in winter. If you don’t tolerate the heat well, perhaps consider taking a trip in the cooler winter months from November - February
  • This trip includes a homestay with local families on day 2 in Aye Village. You will sleep on mattresses on the floor in a mixed-gender dormitory style with shared bathrooms. Myanmar is a conservative country so take care to pack loose, lightweight, long clothing to be respectful and keep cool in the predominantly hot climate
  • This package requires a visa to Myanmar
